Chief Keef's $6 Million Record Deal

Chief Keef may be "Finally Rich" — as the title of his first album proclaims — but the teenage rap star won't be able to spend most of his big-money pay check until he turns 18 in August, DNAinfo.com has learned.
Chief Keef signed a three-album contract — and a separate deal to control his own record label — with Interscope Records that could pay the South Side gangster rapper more than $6 million over three years. A split of future royalties could make for an even bigger pay day, according to court papers.
The terms of Chief Keef's record deal were made public in a Cook County chancery court filing that seeks a judge's approval for the rapper to finalize agreements with Interscope. Court approval of the contracts is required by law because Chief Keef, 17, is a minor.
Interscope agreed to pay Chief Keef a $440,000 advance — half up front and half after a judge signs off on the deal — that will be deposited in a court administered trust fund on his behalf, according to court papers. The so-called "blocked trust" is controlled by Chief Keef's legal guardian, his grandmother, Margaret Carter. Withdrawals typically are prohibited from block trusts until a minor turns 18.
Chief Keef — who is currently locked up in juvenile detention for 60 days — also received at least $300,000 to cover the cost of recording "Finally Rich," which sold 50,000 copies during the first week it was released in December.
Chief Keef's deals all depend on album sales. If "Finally Rich" doesn't sell at least 250,000 albums by December 2013, Interscope has the right to pull the plug on subsequent album releases — two albums and a compilation of hits, according to the deal.
In a separate three-year deal to establish Chief Keef's record label "Glory Boyz Entertainment" — GBE for short — Interscope Records forked over another $440,000 advance. That agreement calls for both Chief Keef and his manager, Rovan Manuel, to each be paid $180,000. The deal calls for 15-percent of Chief Keef's advance to be put in his trust fund, according to court papers.
The GBE operating agreement calls for Chief Keef and Manuel to each own 40 percent of the record label, a subsidiary of Interscope.
Derrick Coleman, who raps under the name Fredo Santana, was paid a $40,000 advance and received 10-percent interest in the label. Chief Keef's uncle Alonzo Carter and Anthony H. Dade also each hold 5-percent ownership of GBE, according to court papers.
The contract also calls for Interscope to pay GBE $200,000 for "overhead" expenses, which include office, travel, entertainment and "salary cost" and additional money for marketing, according to the contract.
GBE and Interscope will split profits equally. Interscope Records, however, can terminate the Glory Boyz deal if losses exceed $4.5 million, according to the contract.
Despite his plea for "one more chance," a Cook County judge last week ordered Chief Keef held in juvenile detention for violating his probation on charges he pointed a gun at Chicago police officers.
On Jan. 16, the mother of the rapper's daughter filed a motion seeking immediate temporary child support for the girl.
The toddler, who Chief Keef calls "Kay Kay," has a song named after her on "Finally Rich." She also makes a cameo appearance in the rapper's YouTube video for the song, "They Know."
Chief Keef is set to appear before a judge on his probation violation on March 14, when he could be released from custody. A judge is set to rule on the Interscope deal on April 16.

Chief Keef Gets Sentenced

South Side rapper Chief Keef was sentenced today to 60 days in juvenile detention for violating his probation on a previous gun conviction.
Minutes before Judge Carl Anthony Walker imposed the sentence, Chief Keef choked up as he apologized for firing a rifle last summer during an on-camera interview to promote his album, "Finally Rich."
Reading from a crumpled piece of paper, the 17-year-old pleaded for one more chance, telling the judge he was on the verge of completing his GED and was a new father of two daughters.
His mother, who was present in the courtroom with a few other relatives, let out a loud cry as her son spoke.
"I'm sorry for all the wrong I have done," Chief Keef told the judge as his lawyer patted him on the back.
The judge ruled on Tuesday that Chief Keef’s actions at a New York gun range violated his 18-month probation sentence for a previous gun conviction and ordered him taken into custody at that time a juvenile detention facility.
Several reporters and police officers crammed the tight courtroom during the approximately half-hour hearing today in the juvenile court complex.
The rapper, whose real name is Keith Cozart, sat hunched over at times while Assistant State's Atty. Jullian Brevard spoke to the court about the rifle video and the rapper's gun conviction for pointing a weapon at a Chicago police officer.
Brevard reminded the court about two previous drug arrests on Chief Keef’s record before his 2011 gun conviction. The prosecutor also noted how some of the lyrics in the rapper’s song "Love Sosa," refer to his gun conviction as well as to gangs and drugs.
As part of his probation, Chief Keef was prohibited from having any contact with guns.
"He's been given ample opportunities to stop this behavior," Brevard said.
Chief Keef's lawyer, Dennis Berkson, acknowledged to the court that the video wasn't a smart decision on his client's part, but Berkson reiterated his position from Tuesday's hearing that the video was just an interview.
He also argued that the explicit content in his client's lyrics doesn't reflect that the rapper himself is a criminal.
"People say whatever they want in a song. I'm sure that the Beatles said really goofy things in songs," Berkson said. "It doesn't mean they were out there to commit a crime."

Teen Killed at Chicago State University

A 17-year-old boy was shot and killed after a fight broke out at the end of a high school basketball game at Chicago State University.

Tyrone Lawson was shot around 9:20 p.m. outside the gymnasium near 95th Street and King Drive, according to Police News Affairs Officer Daniel O’Brien.

Shortly before the shooting, an argument had broken out in a handshake line after the game between Simeon Career Academy and Morgan Park High School, police said. The argument spilled into the parking lot and someone pulled out a gun and shot Lawson, officials said.

Each team was held in the locker rooms longer than normal after the game as tensions ran high in the gym, witnesses said.

University police issued a message to officers, asking them to watch for a Jeep. It was pulled over east of the school and two people were taken into custody, officials said. Police said they found a gun inside the Jeep.

It was unclear what the fight was about. Nothing outside ordinary bumps and physical contact appeared to have happened during the game between the two school, which are located on Vincennes Avenue about 30 blocks apart.
An aunt told WGN-TV that Lawson was an honor student at Morgan Park High School and was six weeks away from his 18th birthday.

His mother had dropped Lawson off at the game and was waiting for him to call her back, she said.
The university released a statement Thursday morning saying it was "deeply saddened by the tragic shooting death."

“(Chicago Public Schools) periodically uses the university’s athletic facility to provide a neutral setting for student sporting events. This is the first such incident to occur on the campus of Chicago State University where CPS students have played many times over the last three years," the statement said.

"Additional security is provided by the university and all external partners during high school sporting events. Arrests have been made and university officials are awaiting the outcome of a full investigation to learn details about the shooting incident.”

Lawson, of the 11600 block of South Peoria Street, was pronounced dead at 9:59 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

COOK COUNTY JUVENILE COURT — Chicago rap star Chief Keef handed over his phone and headed off to jail Tuesday afternoon after a judge ruled he violated his probation by holding a gun in an online video.
The 17-year-old rapper, whose real name is Keith Cozart, was taken into custody during a hearing in Juvenile Court in Chicago. A second hearing on his sentence will be held Thursday.
After the news broke, the rapper began trending on Twitter worldwide. So did the phrase "Free Chief Keef" and #FreeSosa, referring to one of the rapper's aliases.
Cook County Juvenile Court Judge Carl Anthony Walker said Chief Keef exhibited a "clear disregard for the court's authority" in appearing with a gun during an interview with Pitchfork.com.
When the hearing started Chief Keef, wearing a black hoodie, camouflaged pants and tan Timberland boots, stood before the judge, his left leg shook nervously. Later during the two-hour hearing, the rapper rocked in his chair.
Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Jullian Brevard questioned a juvenile probation supervisor who testified that Chief Keef was told the conditions of his probation required him to have no contact with "gangs, guns and drugs."
Brevard argued that no one "put a gun to his head" to force Chief Keef to shoot at a paper target during the Pitchfork.com interview.
The video showed the teen rapper getting firearm instruction, loading and firing a  semi-automatic Rugar rifle at the Westside Rifle and Pistol Range in New York City. The video also appeared to show that Chief Keef was a pretty good shot — bullet holes struck the target, a drawing of a man, on the chest.
Dominador Lacson, a firearms instructor at Westside, testified the gun Chief Keef fired was chained to the range's firing booth.
Chief Keef's attorney, Dennis Berkson, argued his client was merely involved in the production of a video interview that was scheduled and attended by representatives of Interscope Records, Chief Keef's label.
Berkson also argued Chief Keef never had a gun outside the range, but the judge said the range was no different than holding a gun in a private home. Berkson said it was "stupid" for Chief Keef to participate in the gun-range interview, but he didn't violate the "spirit" of the judge's probation order.
"This is no different than if he was in a movie," said Berkson. "It is a movie."
But prosecutors argued the judge's "word is law" and  a "higher authority ... above Interscope Records."
Judge Walker agreed.

After the ruling, Chief Keef didn't show emotion. He calmly emptied his pockets, told a court deputy that he wasn't wearing earrings and handed his phone to his uncle. That means Chief Keef, a prolific user of social media, won't be sending out Tweets or Instagram photos anytime soon.
On the way out of court, his reps weren't chatty.
"Kiss my ass," one of them told a reporter.
Glory Boyz rappers, including Fredo Santana, Gino Marley, Capo and SD, took to Twitter to voice their support for Chief Keef and their disdain for the Chicago police department.

"Just left Court For @ChiefKeef Me and My #SQUADD #GBEGloryboyz Finna Spazzout #300," Capo posted on his Twitter handle, Capo_GBE300.
Santana tweeted a message to Chief Keef fans saying that the jailed rapper would be "back down real soon I'ma hold shit down me an the squad got chu #GBE," followed by "F--- the police."
Chief Keef will remain in custody until Thursday when Walker is set to decide how long to keep the rapper in custody. Chief Keef was given 18 months probation in January 2012 for pleading guilty to a unlawful use of a weapon following his arrest for pointing a gun at Chicago police officers in December 2011.
The details of the arrest were exclusively reported Monday by DNAinfo.com Chicago.
Chief Keef was charged with four felonies — three counts of aggravated assault with a firearm on a police officer and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon. He also was hit with a misdemeanor charge of resisting arrest.
Chief Keef was held in the Cook County Juvenile Detention Center until a judge sentenced him to home confinement at his grandmother’s house.
On Thursday, prosecutors presented Judge Walker with a 15-page report and said they planned to call two witnesses to strengthen their petition to have Chief Keef jailed.
In court, assistant state's attorney Brevard said Chief Keef has had two chances to abide by the terms of his probation — a reference to two prior times the rapper had been found in violation of his probation — and "he's still not learning."

Brevard also accused Chief Keef and his representatives of lying in court about where the rapper lives. Brevard showed the judge a copy of a lease for a house in Northbrook that includes Chief Keef's name as a person living in the house.
He said it was just another example of Chief Keef telling "more lies" and "blowing off probation orders."
But Berkson said Keef uses the house as a recording studio and doesn't live there.
