Man Charged with Killin 15 Year Old Girl in Calumet City

Calumet City had been aiming at someone else. Eric Brown, 20, of Calumet City, is charged with first-degree murder and aggravated battery with a firearm, according to police. Brown walked up to the kitchen window of a home in the 500 block of Ingraham Avenue in the south suburb and opened fire, killing Ashaya Miller and wounding her older cousin. Brown was arrested Monday and held for three days while Calumet City police and the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force investigated the murder. Charges were announced Thursday night. Miller's family is holding a vigil at 6 p.m. Friday on the block where she was killed, according to police. "It hurts,'' said Ashaya's grandfather, James Miller, 62, of south suburban Riverdale, who said he called Ashaya by her nickname, "Shay Shay.'' Ashaya would come over to see her father, who lives in Riverdale with Miller, almost every weekend and sometimes even on her way home from school. She would often bring her homework and also enjoyed watching television and lounging on his couch, Miller said. "She was a good person. She was always over here to keep me company,'' Miller said. This weekend was no different, and he had seen her on Saturday, the day before the shooting. "She was in a good mood. She had gotten her nails done,'' Miller said. Ashaya was looking forward to seeing her friends and family at her aunt's home on Ingraham, where they had a party Saturday night, and she stayed overnight, her grandfather said. She had one brother, two sisters and many cousins, and other relatives with whom she was close. Miller had the day off from his bakery job and was at home when he was called to the hospital after learning Ashaya was shot. She had been in the kitchen as relatives were doing someone's hair. "We knew she got shot, but we didn't think she was going to die,'' Miller said. "It was awful." chicagobreaking@tribune.com Twitter: @chicagobreaking

50 Schools Closing In Chicago

As word dribbled out today about which Chicago public schools will be closed, some parents renewed their charges that minorities are being unfairly targeted while principals accused CPS of "slash and burn."

CPS officials are expected to release a list this afternoon of about 50 schools slated for closing, many educators, parents and students at targeted schools got word earlier today.
Natasha Norment, 28, said she was “very disappointed” after learning Wednesday evening through a news report that her 10-year-old daughter's school, Mahalia Jackson Elementary at 917 W. 88th St., was on the list.

“It seems that they’re targeting the African-American schools,” Norment said Thursday. “The majority of these schools are in black communities. I feel it’s not right.”

Clarice Berry, president of Chicago Principals and Administrators Association, said principals of schools on the closing list were told at 6 a.m. today and were instructed to inform their teachers but not to talk to anyone else until 5 p.m. Berry said she also was told by CPS not to talk to the media until 5 p.m.

“I’m angry. I’m upset. I’m shaking to the core. I didn’t think they’d actually go through with this, the largest number of closings ever. There’s been no real planning,” Berry said.

Berry said there has been little planning at schools that are expected to take in students whose buildings are shuttered. Principals have told her that nothing has been worked out to provide the libraries or air conditioning CPS has promised at all receiving schools.

“There’s been no planning. Just slash and burn,” she said.

Berry expressed anger at Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who is on a family skiing vacation in Utah this week. “You do this stuff and you run away on vacation,” she said. “That is really wonderful.”

The Chicago Teachers Union released a statement saying it was "outraged" as the "hit list" of schools.

"Today, a vacationing Mayor Rahm Emanuel is sending our school district into utter chaos," it said. "CPS lacks the capacity to close 50 schools. The CTU contends closing these schools are unnecessary, will not save the district or taxpayers a single dollar, and put students’ safety and academics at risk."

Today's expected announcement follows weeks of debate between CPS and City Hall over how many schools to close. The district, which says it needs to close under-enrolled schools to address a looming $1 billion deficit, has been working from a preliminary list of 129 schools released in mid-February.

In addition to closing about 50 schools, sources said the district will consolidate or overhaul staff at a number of other schools, bringing the total number of school actions to about 70. Urban districts around the country have been forced to close large numbers of schools, but if the number in Chicago holds it would likely be the largest number of schools shut down by a city in a single year in recent history.

CPS has never closed more than a dozen or so schools in one year. Emanuel has pushed to close a large number of schools all at once, and in return has offered a five-year moratorium on closures.

While district officials said they are closing a large number of schools to address a budget shortfall, they have not released details on how much it will cost to shut down schools, provide extra security and safety programs for students, and equip receiving schools with promised upgrades like science labs, libraries and air conditioning.

District officials said they'll pay for the investments by "redirecting resources from underutilized" schools, which will be closed.

Norment didn’t yet know where her daughter Navi will be going to school next year.

“Once the schools close and the kids are going to the other schools, are they still going to get the same quality of education? And is that school going to be overcrowded?” Norment wondered, before adding that her daughter is currently receiving “one-on-one education” at Mahalia Jackson Elementary.

Norment also worries about Navi’s ability to adapt to a new classroom that could separate her from friends she’d known since preschool.

“If she has to go to another school she’s going to have to get a whole new group of friends, a whole new group of teachers, and she’s used to these teachers and their teaching style,” she said.

Norment attended Mahalia Jackson Elementary as a child, which only added to her disappointment.

“The majority of the teachers I had are teaching my kid now,” she said. “So I know she is getting a good quality education.”

7 Shot after Rap Show

Seven people were shot during a rap album release party at Mr. G's Entertainment Center in the Gresham neighborhood on the South Side early Thursday morning, authorities say.

At least one gunman opened fire after a fight broke out shortly after 1 a.m. as the party at the club at 87th Street and Ashland Avenue was winding down, according to Police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro. It wasn't clear if any of the wounded were the shooters, he said.

Six of those shot went to hospitals on their own, police said.

Three people showed up at Advocate Christ Medical Center: A 19-year-old woman, a 21-year-old man and a 23-year-old man. A man in his 20s was taken to Holy Cross Hospital and another man, 21, showed up there on his own.  Two others, a 26-year-old man and a 36-year-old man, went to Little Company of Mary Hospital.
Police said hundreds of people were inside the club when a chair was thrown and a security guard heard shots, according to police, citing preliminary information. The crowd panicked and people started running from the club, police said.
Responding officers heard people shouting "They're shooting!" and "I'm shot," police said. The officers discovered several patrons shot at the club.

Police said the shooting appeared to be gang related, but it wasn't clear what led to the fight and shooting.
The camera inside the club wasn't working, and detectives planned on checking footage from a surveillance camera across the street at a phone store, police said.

Rappers Lil' Mouse and King Samson had been performing at the club, according to Chicago police and a patron.

King Samson, on a Twitter account that appears to be his, said he would be appearing at Mr. G's Wednesday night.  Calls to numbers listed for King Samson and Lil' Mouse weren't returned early Thursday morning.

Lil' Mouse received national media attention over the summer when, at age 13, he released a music video that featured people waving guns at the camera. The video has gotten 2.9 million views on YouTube.

RIHANNA AFTERPARTY

Friday, March 22, 2013 Rihanna OFFICIAL AFTERPARTY will be at VLive!

Rihanna 2 Visit Barrington High

Rihanna might be known less for her altruism than for her tabloid exploits, her stormy relationship with Chris Brown and her penchant for tweeting photos of herself in various stages of undress.
But a video produced by Barrington High School students that highlights the charitable work of their peers has won the school a visit from the pop star.
Hours before she's due to perform at the United Center on Friday, the Barbadian singer is scheduled to spend about 45 minutes at the northwest suburban school meeting students and taking questions.

Besides banning media coverage, Rihanna's people put no restrictions on the visit other than that she wanted the focus to be less on her than on the students' good works, school officials said.
To that end, Barrington junior Catherine Goetze, who was chosen to handle the Q and A with Rihanna, said that "we will avoid ... 100 percent" any questions about Brown, who pleaded guilty to assaulting Rihanna in 2009 before the two reportedly resumed dating.
"We want this to be about her singing, her music career and her work with charity," said Goetze.
Goetze was among several students from the school's BHS-TV video and news production class who assembled the video — a montage of various school charity initiatives set to Rihanna's song "Diamonds."
It was chosen as the winner of a contest Rihanna sponsored seeking the "most creative and inspiring lipdub or video that includes a giving back to your community (and world!) message," according to her website.
School spokesman Jeff Arnett said the visit is essentially free for the school, though the district will pay overtime for three local police officers who will supply extra security, much as they would for a school sporting event.
Friday is a nonattendance day at the school, so the district offered free tickets first to Barrington High students, with any leftovers being offered to local middle school students and those at area private schools.
Rihanna also is apparently sending her personal deejay to play music and entertain students while they await her arrival in her tour bus on Friday.

6 Month Old Baby Dies (video)

A 6-month-old girl died this morning, a day after she and her father were shot several times outside a home in the South Side's Woodlawn neighborhood, officials said.

Jonylah Watkins had undergone hours of surgery at Comer Children's Hospital after she was shot early Monday afternoon. "This morning, the baby passed away," said the Rev. Corey Brooks, a spokesman for the family, "We have another tragedy in the city of Chicago."

The baby was pronounced dead at 6 a.m., according to the medical examiner's office. Hospital spokesman John Easton said one gunshot wound caused the fatal injuries.

The girl's father, Jonathan Watkins, 29, was shot in his left side and right buttock and sustained a graze wound to the face, police said. He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in serious-to-critical condition, fire officials said.

Police said a gunman emerged from a gangway in the 6500 block of South Maryland Avenue shortly before 1 p.m. and opened fire. Watkins was shot as he stood by the minivan's open front passenger door changing his daughter's diaper as she lay on the seat, police said.

The gunman fled to a nearby parking lot and jumped into a blue conversion van, which sped north through an alley, police said. Police were scouring the area for surveillance footage.

Other family members said the girl's 20-year-old mother was at work at a McDonald's when the shooting happened. She had been shot in the leg last spring while pregnant with Jonylah, they said.

"She's very distraught, she's in a lot of pain," Brooks said this morning. "They just got married several weeks ago. This is a tough time.

"We're going to help find who did this," said Brooks, pastor of New Beginnings Church in Woodlawn, which is offering up to $5,000 for information leading police to the gunman. "We're going to take back our neighborhood, we're going to find who did this."

Jonylah's aunt, Dominique Young, 21, said that she and other relatives happened to be walking along 67th Street when they heard about 10 "big gun shots." They started calling around to check on family members but couldn't reach Watkins.

Police were looking into a claim from a relative that someone had threatened, in a Facebook post, to shoot Jonathan Watkins, authorities said.

The baby's grandmother, Maryann Young, described the baby as a "fun-loving girl."

More than two dozen shootings occurred within a few blocks of Monday's shooting through 2012, city crime statistics show. But through February 2013, the area has seen far fewer shootings than during the same two-month period in 2012.

Down the street from the shooting site Monday, Sedell Brown, watched her grandchildren, 12 and 13, walk to her apartment from school. The two grandchildren live with Brown, 54, who doesn't let them play outdoors.

"It don't make sense how they kill people around here," she said.
