A 34-year-old man was killed early Sunday morning and eight others wounded since Saturday afternoon in shootings from the Northwest Side to the Southeast Side.
The man killed was shot about 6:05 a.m. in the 2500 block of West Division Street in the Humboldt Park neighborhood on the West Side and was pronounced dead at John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County at 6:35 a.m., authorities said.
The man killed was shot in the head, and a second man, age 20, was shot in the arm and later walked into West Suburban Hospital in Oak Park, said Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli.
A dispute that is believed to have started in an after-hours bar on Division Street escalated and then spilled out onto Division Street, Mirabelli said. The two men were shot, and the glass of the place where the fight started shattered in the course of the shooting, he said.
The man wounded in the arm fled the scene, leaving a trail of blood that ended two blocks away, in the 2700 block of West Haddon Avenue, police said.
One witness heard three or four shots, then "saw a Chrysler Sebring fly by, with tinted windows. It was brownish or goldish." The witness saw two cars pulled over, one a blue PT Cruiser, and heard a couple of girls but mostly guys arguing. " 'Just get in the car, just get in the car,' they were saying to one of them," the witness said.
The building across the street from the killing – a yellow, four-story building with a stucco-type façade with glass offices and stores below – houses offices for State Rep. Cynthia Soto and Alderman Roberto Maldonado.
Residents who lived above the storefront where the shooting occurred – described by neighbors as a "speakeasy" where a few in the neighborhood gather to drink – leaned over to watch the action below. The glass from the front door had been shattered and trickled down a cement slope in front, where it gathered like snow at the sidewalk.
Others who knew the man who was killed watched from across the street, sharing cigarettes and fretting over the man's fate. One thought he was dead but wasn't certain. Another tried to be more optimistic. All except one pooled into a minivan and drove away.
One walked with his hood up down a gangway southward toward Haddon Street, where he lived.
Steve Campos, 62, leaves his Humboldt Park home – a neighborhood he's lived in for 35 years – for a leisurely bike ride each morning. He approached Division Street from Maplewood Avenue, pedaling slow, and turned toward the crime scene tape. He stopped.
"It used to be bad, years ago," he said of violence nearby. "You get tired, you can't walk in your neighborhood. It's ridiculous. Young guys want to kill each other over stupidity."
Earlier about 2.5 miles southwest, in the area around Franklin Boulevard and Central Park Avenue in East Garfield Park, a 30-year-old man was shot in the arm by police, after he pointed a shotgun at police from his car.
An 18-year-old man suffered four gunshot wounds, including in the legs and buttocks, about 4 a.m. in the 2000 block of West Randolph Street in the West Town neighborhood on the West Side.
He was walking east on Randolph with at least one friend when someone came around the corner and started shooting, police said. He ran to the back of the building he had been in front of and fell down. The van he had been standing next to had its windows shot out.
In the East Garfield Park neighborhood, another man, 28, was shot in the 3800 block of West Huron Street about 3:15 a.m. He had been standing on a corner with another man and told police he "heard shots and felt pain." Police said he "became uncooperative" when he got to the hospital.
Another man, 29, was shot in his big toe about 2:15 a.m. during a robbery attempt in the 3500 block of West Barry Avenue in the Logan Square neighborhood on the Northwest Side. He walked into Norwegian-American Hospital with the wound and he's in good condition.
A 21-year-old man walked into the Austin District police station at Central Avenue and Madison Street in the Austin neighborhood with a gunshot wound to his buttocks about 1 a.m. Sunday, according to police. He had been shot in the 5400 block of West Monroe Street and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition, Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer Ron Gaines said.
Someone shot a 19-year-old man in the Jeffery Manor neighborhood on the Far South Side about 11:10 p.m., police said. He was hit once in the back in the 2100 block of East 97th Street and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in critical condition.
He was facing a house on the block when he heard gunfire and was hit and then ran into a gangway to flee the gunfire. He ran back out after blood had pooled there and collapsed on the front lawn, where police found him.
In the city's South Shore neighborhood, a 54-year-old man shot himself in the abdomen in the 7200 block of South Paxton Avenue at 3:15 p.m., according to Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer Joshua Purkiss. The shooting is believed to have been accidental.
He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where his condition had stabilized, according to Purkiss.
The victim apparently shot himself, according to a Grand Crossing District police lieutenant who was citing preliminary information.
In the Englewood neighborhood about 1 p.m., a 19-year-old woman was shot twice in the leg in the 6700 block of South Lafayette Avenue, said Purkiss.
An ambulance took her to Holy Cross Hospital in serious-to-critical condition, said Chicago Fire Department spokesman Will Knight.
