The mother of a 1-year-old boy and her boyfriend have been charged with first-degree murder, according to the Cook County state's attorney's office.
Lakesha Baker, 22, and Michael Scott, 21, both of the 300 block of South 10th Avenue in Maywood, each have been charged with murder in connection with the death of 1-year-old Bryeon Hunter. Baker was ordered held with no bond in bond court Saturday and Scott's bond was set at $750,000.
Sally Daly, spokeswoman for the state's attorney's office, said the boy's body has not been found yet, she said.
Hunter's grandmother, Brenda Lloyd, had no comment on the charges against her daughter.
"You'll have to talk to my lawyer," she said.
An Amber Alert was issued Tuesday afternoon because the boy was reported missing.
Maywood Police Chief Tim Curry said officers began searching the Des Plaines River that night and continued through much of the day Wednesday. He said that was standard protocol and not the result of specific information.
"We don't have any witness information that led us to the river," he said at the time. "This is the usual protocol for a missing person case."
Friday night, Curry had no comment.
Multiple agencies were called in to assist with the search, including the Cook County sheriff's canine unit. A department representative said the search was called off because of the weather but said officers expect to resume.
Wednesday afternoon, Brenda Lloyd was at the Maywood police station, where she said her daughter — Bryeon's mother — and the daughter's boyfriend were being interviewed by police. Law enforcement sources close to the investigation confirmed that the two were being interviewed.
Curry said the boy's mother said that she and Bryeon were on their way to a park Tuesday afternoon when three men jumped out of a black sports car, beat her and took Bryeon with them.
But Curry said that after interviewing the three men the boy's mother identified as her attackers, investigators concluded her account was inaccurate.
