At least 10 people were shot today, including a young woman who died after being shot while standing with four others during a possible drive-by attack this afternoon in the Englewood neighborhood on the South Side, police said.
At 4:54 p.m. an 18-year-old woman, a 15-year-old boy, an 18-year-old man, and a 20 and 21-year-old man were shot during a possible drive-by attack in the 5700 block of South Sangamon Street, police News Affairs Officer Veejay Zala said.
The woman has died, Zala said. She was pronounced dead at 6:30 p.m. at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook Coutny, according to a spokesman for the Cook County medical examiner's office. Her identity was not being released immediately.
Five ambulances were sent to the scene, and five people were taken to hospitals in serious to critical condition, according to the Chicago Fire Department.
Two were taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County in critical condition, while two thers were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in serious condition, according to the fire department. The 21-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to the knee and was taken to Saint Bernard Hospital and Health Care Center, according to the fire department. His condition was not given but was not considered life-threatening.
Officials called an EMS Plan I, which automatically sends at least five ambulances to the scene.
In a separate incident on the city’s Woodlawn neighborhood on the South Side, a man was shot in the head in the 1400 block of East 66th Place, police said.
The victim, who was conscious and able to talk, was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in serious condition, police said.
Earlier this afternoon, two people were shot on the North Side in the city's Uptown neighborhood.
The shooting happened at 3:23 p.m., Zala said.
A 20-year-old woman was shot in her leg and shoulder, while a 21-year-old man was shot in his leg, Zala said.
Both of the victims were taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where their conditions have been stabilized, according to the fire department.
In two additional shootings this afternoon on the South Side, a 16-year-old and a man were wounded.
At 2:48 p.m. a man was shot multiple times and critically wounded in the 7000 block of South Bishop Street in the Englewood neighborhood, according to the fire department. He was taken in critical condition to Stroger Hospital.
A few minutes later, at 2:56 p.m. a 16-year-old was shot in the hand in the 8800 block of South Burley Avenue and taken in good condition to Advocate Trinity Hospital, according to the fire department.
